Ryan Braun recently got suspended by Major League Baseball for his use of Performance-Enhancing Drugs. The suspension will last for the remainder of the season, and he will forgo his salary. His story has consumed reports on ESPN, but there are still some things that you probably don’t know about him…
#1 – He played baseball at the University of Miami with St. Louis Cardinals centerfielder Jon Jay. The two remain good friends.
#2 – He was a pitcher through his junior year of high school.
#3 – He was offered baseball scholarships from Stanford and UC Berkeley, but actually attended the U on an academic scholarship.
#4 – He was raised Jewish. In fact, his dad moved from Israel to the U.S. when he was seven years old. Most of Ryan’s dad’s side of the family was murdered in the Holocaust.
#5 – He was the only Jewish athlete invited by President George W. Bush to the annual Hanukkah Dinner at the White House, where he talked baseball with the President.
