While the actual scary factor for some of these can be called in question, they scale of destruction they cause is pretty cool. The Japanese call this type of monster kaju, and the obviously find it scarier than we do in the western world, though some of the monster on this list have originated in the west, so here’s a look at the top ten giant monsters.
10 – Rodan
This mutant pterodactyl from space was much cooler than Mothra who it edged out for the number 10 spot . One day I’ll track down the Rodan toy I saw in a store as a kid at a horror convention somewhere.
9 – King Ghidorah
A flying Hydra who gave Godzilla a lot of grief, it evolved into various incarnations as the budget of Toho films got bigger.
8 – Hedorah the Smog Monster
Another one of Godzilla’s rogues gallery, this spot was originally going to the Blob, but the Smog Monster looks a lot cooler with the big glowing red eyes that give it somewhat of a personality.
7 – Gwoemul
This creature from the Host was pretty gruesome and caused this under rated film to actually be scary, though the scope of it’s carnage might not have been as great.
6 – the Kraken
Release the Kraken… the ape face of the original version is some much better than the version from the awful Clash of the Titans remake. Any monster with a steady diet of virgins gets bumped to the head of the line.
5 – Mecha – Godzilla
While it’s a robot it’s a robot modeled after a monster so it makes the list.
4 – Smaug
The most iconic dragon of epic fantasy is pretty devastating in the new Hobbit movies.
3 – Cthulhu
More of a god than a monster, it really hasn’t gotten the props it deserves on screen, much like the majority of Lovecraft’s work. It did influence the design of the monsters in movies like the Mist.
2 – King Kong
This big ape is more of an anti hero, much like Frankenstein he gets out sympathy more than our terror , but the giant ape influenced these sorts of movies.
1 – Godzilla
Often called the King of Monsters for good reason. When he isn’t defending Japan from cosmic nastiness he is chomping down on it.
