I know it’s vulgar in this day and age to talk about the long lost relic called books but I still read them and on from the cold uncaring confines of a Kindle either, I like the feel of dead trees in my hand. Most of the greatest horror movies have come from the greatest horror novels so lets look at who wrote them. The measuring stick I am using for their score is how many of their books I actually like. I ‘m saying Modern because it’s not fair to put them up against Poe or Lovecraft.
10-Dean Koontz- score 5
His Frankenstein series have been the only books I have gotten into he does seem to be hung up on science gone wrong.
9-Peter Straub- score 6
He really gets by with a little help from his friend, namely Stephen King with Ghost Story as the best of his solo work
8-Chuck Palahniuk score 6
Most of his work does fall under what he calls transgression fiction, but he has more than enough gruesomeness to belong here more than even some of the authors on this list more well known in the genre for being horror writers.
7-Jeff Lindsay – score 8
The creator of Dexter, whose books take on a more supernatural explanation that the series.
6-Thomas Harris – score 8
The tense crime thrillers are just cannibalistic to qualify as Horror , with Lecter as the only feather in his cap.
Some of the more recent Anita Blake books have been too preoccupied with being erotica to remember they were once more horrorific, if we are going to count straws then she is paranormal romance, but has enough grit to be placed here.
4-Poppy z Brite – score 8
Exquisite Corpse and Lost souls are two of the best horror novels ever written, but Poppy’s candle burned out early and she retired from the game after going into writing less than inspired non-horror novels about resturants in New Orleans .
3-Anne Rice – Score 11
She got an extra point for Memmnoch the Devil, which was the best of her Vampire books, the Mayfair Witches were pretty decent as well.
2-Clive Barker score- 12
He is more imaginative in the surreal landscapes he creates but I don’t feel his excursions into children’s book was need but then again I haven’t started trying to read Abarat to my daughter either.
1-Stephen King – score 15
His best work is the Shining , in fact I gave him two points for that. We are only scoring horror here so Eyes of the Dragon is a good book but its fantasy.
