Billboard announced today that it will not include the 1 million album downloads Jay-Z is giving to Galaxy mobile phone users through a deal with Samsung. Jay-Z had announced the partnership earlier this week.
Jay-Z‘s new album, “Magna Carta Holy Grail,” will be released July 7th, but it will go out to 1 million Samsung users on July 4th. Billboard posted a letter on their website by editorial director Bill Werde which explained that they won’t count the downloads because Samsung ultimately isn’t selling the album on its phones. He further explains that it was not easy turning down a deal with Jay-Z, who had requested that Billboard include them on the chart.
Bill Werde wrote, “The passionate and articulate argument by Jay’s team that something was for sale and Samsung bought it … doesn’t mesh with precedent.”
Do you think the sales should count?
