Venus and Serena Williams have dominated women’s tennis for the past decade. If it’s possible, Serena is even more dominant now than she has ever been. I remember when I first got into tennis…home from school for the summer, turning on the TV and watching players compete on the clay courts of Roland Garros. It was hard not to have a favorite and keep watching them every other day. One thing I did notice was that there weren’t a lot of Americans to pull for. That’s definitely not the case anymore.
Now, we are starting to see a lot more ladies with ‘USA’ after their names in the big-time tournaments. Names like Sloane Stephens, Jamie Hampton, and Madison Keys are beginning to get some buzz. Stephens knocked Serena out of play in the Australian Open this year. It was a match that generated a lot of hype for the young star, although she didn’t win the tournament.
The next Grand Slam Tennis Tournament will be the French Open beginning at the end of May. I can’t wait to see which young American star has a breakout tournament.
