Josh Smith becomes a free agent at the end of this season. The Hawks believe Smith will be asking for more money than they are willing to pay him. So…what do they do? Trade him while they can still get something out of it. If they let the trade deadline lapse, they’ll have Smith through the end of the season, but he’ll sign with another team and the Hawks will be left with nothing in return. BUT, if they act now while Smith is in great demand, they could get something worthwhile.

Currently, the Nets are very interested in Smith. The Nets are willing to deal Kris Humphries (Mr. Kardashian himself) and MarShon Brooks, but the Hawks don’t seem to be biting. It’ll take more than Humphries and Brooks to get Smith to Brooklyn. Possibly throw in their first-round draft pick, and they may have themselves a deal.

I don’t know if that trade has a lot of upside for the Hawks. A first-round pick makes that deal a lot sweeter, but Brooks and Humphries don’t do anything for me. The Nets have also been in talks with the Bobcats in trading Humphries for Ben Gordon. Either way, I don’t think Kris Humphries will be in New York much longer.
