Oscar Pistorius was indicted this morning on charges of murdering his girlfriend. If you recall, the Olympian ‘Blade Runner’ allegedly shot his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day after mistaking her for a house intruder.
Prosecutors said witnesses heard a woman screaming before the sound of fatal gunshots fired in the early hours of the morning. Pistorius was in the court room for the indictment and cried before the proceedings began. Oscar Pistorius will also face charges of illegal possession of ammunition when he goes on trial March 3 in a court in the South African capital, Pretoria.
Reeva Steenkamp would have celebrated her 30th birthday on Monday and prosecutors said Pistorius shot “with the intention to kill a person,” and a prosecution spokesman said after the hearing that it was premeditated murder, though the word ‘premeditated’ was not mentioned during the indictment. The prosecution will attempt to show that the couple was arguing before she was killed. If convicted Oscar Pistorius could face a minimum of 25 years in prison before parole. There is no death penalty in South Africa.
