The details of the Reeva Steenkamp murder in South Africa have been surfacing little by little daily, but this morning in South African court, Oscar Pistorius swore that he didn’t mean to kill her.  He swears he believed he was shooting an intruder in his bathroom.

Pistorius‘ lawyer read his client’s sworn affidavit to the judge, explaining that he believed an intruder was in his house on Valentine’s Day and he felt vulnerable because he was in bed without his prosthetic legs.  Because of that, Oscar unloaded a round of bullets into his bathroom door.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel saw it differently though, and said Oscar’s motive simply was, “I want to kill.”  The Prosecutor said the Olympian took the time to put his prosthetic legs on, walk 23 feet, and then he began shooting, so he obviously didn’t feel that vulnerable.

Pistorius claims he had no idea he was shooting at Reeva until he realized she was not in his bed.  He woke up to a noise and he was too scared to put the lights on in the room.  He yelled to Reeva for her to call the police, he says.  That’s when he fired a round of bullets into the bathroom door while his girlfriend was sitting on the toilet.

He said, “It filled me with horror and fear.”  He claims he did not have his prosthetic legs on when he fired.  He says he put his legs on, walked to the door and bashed it open with a cricket bat and discovered Reeva mortally wounded.  He says he carried her downstairs and “She died in my arms.”

The Prosecutors are saying that Pistorius and Steenkamp had just finished a shouting match when he fired 4 shots into the bathroom, hitting Steenkamp 3 times.  Pistorius is currently being charged with Premeditated Murder.  The Prosecutor says the killing was premeditated because Pistorius had planned to say that he thought he was shooting an intruder and had told that story to his sister, Aimee.
