The Texas Rangers were losing SO badly to the Red Sox last night that they put in outfielder David Murphy to pitch. Murphy used to pitch in high school, so it’s not like it was the first time he was throwing a curveball. The Rangers were down 17-5 and Ron Washington decided to spare his bullpen and put Murphy into thrown an inning. He struck out Mike Carp with a 67-mph pitch. Check it out as Carp was eventually thrown out for arguing the call.
Washington had to have seen Murphy mess around with pitches before to have enough confidence to let him thrown in an actual game. Murphy did so well that he was the only Rangers’ pitcher that game to not allow a run. Here are his full inning highlights:
