Tim Duncan was benched in the final seconds of the Spurs game over Dallas. Only down by one, the Mavericks had the last possession for the chance to win. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich decided he rather have a smaller and quicker defender in the game like Boris Diaw.
“It’s always tough to sit in that position,” Duncan said in an interview with San Antonio Express-News. “It is what it is. He’s got a game plan, a system in those times to go smaller. If they go smaller or have a shooter in there, he likes to put someone a little more mobile in. You’ve got to respect it.”
Duncan handled it with class and the Spurs pulled out the victory 92-91. It’s not every day a superstar veteran gets benched.
