Tim Lincecum’s no-hitter may have made the lives of the guys in the San Francisco Giants’ front office a little bit harder. Tim Lincecum is a free agent at the end of this season. There has been a lot of speculation as to what the Giants might do. Will they resign him? If he goes somewhere else, will they utilize him as a relief pitcher? The bullpen was looking like a good option given his success there in the postseason last year. But now that he’s throwing no-hitters, what do you do?
I say it all depends on the rest of the season. Right now, the Giants are surprisingly 6.5 games back and in fourth place in the NL West. Lincecum has been struggling since last season. When you compare him to the Cy Young caliber pitcher that he started out as, it’s a huge mystery. What happened to the ace? He’s certainly had his moments where he shows flashes of his former self (i.e. no-hitter against Padres on Sunday). I think it’d be really difficult for the Giants to give up on a guy that’s shown he has the ability to be one of the greatest in the game. We’ll see what happens in the second half. That will be very telling of whether he remains a starter or not.
