Longtime drummer for The Tonight Show band, Ed Shaughnessy has died at the age of 84-years old. Ed died from a heart attack on Friday at home in Calabasas, California.
Ed Shaughnessy performed with Doc Severinsen‘s The Tonight Show band from 1963 to 1992. He also performed on the drums with artists like Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash and Oscar Peterson. Ed was part of the New York Jazz scene has a teenager prior to joining the Johnny Carson-hosted program.
Even after departing the show, Ed Shaughnessy continued to perform and play concerts. In a 1998 interview with the Chicago Tribune, Ed said, “When you have a high-profile gig like [The Tonight Show], people kind of assume that’s your bag, and I certainly don’t blame anybody. But prior to getting that gig, I had a really deep and rich jazz background, and I really made my living as a jazz drummer.”
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ilene Woods, the voice of Cinderella in the Disney animated film, who passed away in 2010.
Rest in peace Ed Shaughnessy.
