Skateboard legend, Tony Hawk thinks the Olympic committee needs to wake up and add skateboarding as a sport for the Summer Games. Since it was announced recently, that the Olympic‘s will be dropping wrestling after the 2016 Summer Games, they are looking to add another sport to the roster.
A photog recently asked Tony Hawk about the International Olympic Committee‘s plan to drop wrestling and he said, “Well to be honest, at this point the summer Olympics needs skateboarding more than skateboarding needs them.” He continued on, “They need the excitement [the Winter Games has] with snowboarding.”
Hawk also added that the Summer Games are desperate for younger viewers and that skateboarding would be a quick fix to that problem. Currently the sports competing to fill the spot are baseball/softball, karate, squash, wakeboarding and wushu. The International Olympic Committee will not take their final vote until September to replace wrestling, but Hawk believes, “I think if the IOC gets a clue they’re gonna put skateboarding in” for the 2020 games.
Do you think Tony Hawk has a point and they should add skateboarding to the Olympics?
