The 1980’s were full of highs and lows in the video game industry.  It was only the second decade in the industry’s history, none-the-less, investors were still hoping it all was just a passing fad.  Video games were simple in the 80’s, and by the end they had moved on to Super Nintendo, 32-bit Amiga and complex, character-based, multi-genre entertainment beasts.

Eighties babies will remember third generation consoles, like the Japanese release of the Nintendo Family Computer or “Famicom”from 1983.  We then moved on to fourth generation consoles starting in 1987, like Sega/Mega Drive Genesis (1988), Super Famicom which hit around 1990 as well as the Neo Geo in 1990.  The 2D graphics had improved from the previous generation and they started experimenting with 3D graphics.  However the PC had one-uped the rest by already having 3D graphics!  This was also the generation in which the first ever console war began between Sega and Nintendo.

The video game industry is a vibrant industry, especially way back in the 80’s.  In 1981 alone, the arcade game industry was generating $5 Billion of revenue in the U.S.  The number of arcade sales doubled between 1980 and 1982, while the effect video games had on society expanded into music and films.  1983 hit hard with the crash of the video game industry, where several major companies filed for bankruptcy.  Atari, alone, reported a $536 million loss in 1983.  Investors NOW more than ever, believed it WAS only a passing fad.  They have since been proven wrong, as the video game industry became approximately a $34.7 billion market in 2012 and is still going strong in 2013.

While the 1980’s were quite a roller coaster ride decade, a lot of good came out of it.  Tetris, Duck Hunt, and even Super Mario Bros. are just some of the big names that were officially released then.  Let’s check out the Top Ten Best-Selling Games of the 1980’s:
