Urban clothing has become increasingly popular in the last few years. It seems that many of us are choosing to shy away from the large brands that we have grown up with, to switch to smaller, more up and coming brands that we can grow with.
So, are people choosing urban clothing more and more now? Years ago it was all about having the most expensive clothing. It was all about wearing what everyone else was wearing. When it was cool to wear Polo Ralph Lauren, Nike apparel, Starter Jackets and other mass produced brands we all started to lose individuality and become clones of ones self. What changed? Recently, as a whole we value being exclusive and one of a kind. Rather than wanting to wear what our friends have, we tend to move towards finding things that are equally as cool, but not the same. A real follower of the streetwear culture will be one of the firsts to look up new urban clothing brands and become customers before anyone else does.
What tends to happen, however, is the dreaded celebrity curse. Although we value our individuality, we still have a wanting to be cool and in style. One sighting of Kanye West or Rihanna wearing a fresh tee or new pair of kicks and the stock on those items rises by the minute. This is great for the urban clothing brand but terrible for the fashion forward thinker who was hip to that clothing brand just months prior. Urban clothing brands that found themselves a part of this celebrity curse are brands such as Married to the Mob, Pink Dolphin, Obey and more. They’re still dope finds, but it feels (to you) that you can’t wear them anymore now that celebrities have drawn attention to them.
To keep the urban clothing movement going we have to continue to support them, whether big or small. If you find a small brand you love, rock with them. The more money you put into these independent brands, the more they’ll be able to produce. If you are a young person looking to start an urban clothing brand of your own, I recommend you do so. We’ll need something to rock out to when we get older.
